Story Club Minneapolis is a live monthly storytelling show that USUALLY happens at the Bryant-Lake Bowl, and features both an open mic segment and a curated set of performers from all over the Twin Cities arts scene. Story Club showcases true, autobiographical stories -- especially stories that are bold, vulnerable, unexpected, and connected to the complexity of our cultural environment. No two Story Club evenings are ever alike, but each month when we wrap up the show, we feel like we’ve witnessed a new, unique little community coming together.

In the wake of the Coronavirus, Story Club Minneapolis is turning our July and August shows into online streaming productions via Zoom.us. Because of this, we’re swapping our our open mic for curated storytellers, which means that, while there won’t be names pulled from a hat, there WILL be FIVE phenomenal narrative artists from all across North America, coming together in one special evening that we think is a pretty bright spot in an otherwise trying time.

Story Club’s host and producer is actor/writer/storyteller Amy Salloway! She’s the creator of the award-winning autobiographical touring solo plays Does This Monologue Make Me Look Fat?, So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!, and Circumference, as well as the two-person show Entwined. She’s contributed true personal stories to programs on MPR and CBC radio, and has been both a storyteller and story coach for the hit national podcast RISK! Amy teaches memoir and creative writing classes through Minneapolis Community Education, and storytelling workshops for regular people and corporations through The Story Studio. Find out more at Amy’s Facebook page Awkward Moment Productions.

July’s featured performers are Richard Rousseau, Jodie Maruska, Amanda Rountree, Shana Russell, and the actual founder and creator of Story Club…Dana Norris!

Richard Rousseau has been an active participant in the Midwest performance community for over 50 years, as an actor, director, playwright, and as a storyteller. Richard’s interest in storytelling was prompted by a desire to engage his audience without the aid of scripting or rehearsal. For the past 30 years he has been refining his craft in a wide variety of settings in Minnesota and across the country, including the Minnesota History Center, Mill City Museum, Cheap Theatre and Northlands Storytelling Network. Rousseau was recently awarded the National Storytelling Network's Oracle Award for creative excellence. You can find out more about him at Tales From Another Stage.

Jodie Maruska may have grown up in Minnesota, but using the restroom at Cabella’s is as close to camping as she gets! After being asked for her autograph the first night she performed standup, she knew she had found her calling. 20+ years later, she is a comedy veteran who has performed across the country in clubs, at events, theaters, casinos, colleges and yes, even a couple of backyards. In the Twin Cities, she can be seen regularly at Rick Bronson’s House of Comedy, comedy nights at the New Hope Cinema Grill, and The Comedy Corner Underground. She recently made her debut appearance in The 10,000 Laughs Comedy Festival, where she was thrilled to be a part of the “Best of the Festival” show. Jodie appeals to audiences of all ages and uses her familiar “Minnesota-nice” demeanor to great, unexpected comedic effect. Just don’t ask her to go fishing.

Amanda Rountree has performed personal stories for live audiences starting in 2008 with many Chicago-based curated storytelling shows, including This Much is TrueThe Lifeline Storytelling Project, and more.  Her one-woman shows, The Good, the Bad, and the Monkey and 185 Buddhas Walk into a Bar… both had successful runs in Chicago and tours to other cities. She is also a performer, teacher, and director of improvised theatre; more info about her classes and projects can be found at amandarountree.com.

Shana A. Russell, Ph.D. is an academic turned public school teacher based in Newark, NJ. She’s a southern transplant, a public historian, an organizer, and educator. As a scholar and writer, her work centers on working people and the beauty in the stories we tell about everyday life. As an organizer, she documents the historic harm done by oppressive systems as ammunition for those on the front lines. You can find her writing in fancy academic anthologies, textbooks, blogs, and the public testimonies given by everyone from activists to high school debaters. While she is no stranger to storytelling, her safe place is on the outside looking in, bearing witness to all that she sees through writing and activism. This is her first time gracing the stage as a storyteller.

Dana Norris is the founder of Story Club, a monthly storytelling show that has been featured in Poets & Writers magazine. Story Club is held on a monthly basis in ClevelandChicago, Minneapolis, Boston, Tulsa and Columbus.
