Story Club Minneapolis is a live monthly storytelling show featuring both an open mic segment and a curated set of performers from all over the Twin Cities arts scene and beyond. The Story Club stage focuses on true, autobiographical stories -- especially stories that are bold, vulnerable, unexpected, and connected to the complexity of our cultural environment...and especially voices that audiences might not get to hear in other contexts. No two Story Club evenings are ever alike, but each month when we wrap up the show, we feel like we’ve witnessed a new, unique little community coming together.
So! Starting at 6pm, audience members are invited to put their names in the hat for the opportunity to tell an up-to-7-minute story onstage. (Requirements? Has to be a story, has to be true, has to be about you!). When the show begins, three or four tellers are drawn at random to perform, and they'll be followed by our featured guests. Does this make you want to tell a story? GOOD! (Do it! Do it! Do it!)
October’s featured performers are Gabriela Santiago and Basma Ibrahim DeVries!
Gabriela Santiago is a writer, performer, and one of the people of color destroying science fiction and horror in People of Colo(u)r Destroy Science Fiction! and People of Colo(u)r Destroy Horror! (Available at www.destroysf.com!) Her work has also appeared in Lady Churchill's Rosebud Wristlet, Glittership, and other publications. She has frequently performed in the past with Patrick's Cabaret and Raw Sugar, and can often be found at OUTspoken. Her Twitter handle is @LifeOnEarth89.
Basma Ibrahim DeVries, Ph.D. is an Egyptian-American Professor of Communication Studies at Concordia University. Basma trains and consults on intercultural topics with corporate, educational, and community clients, performs at storytelling venues, and is a frequent presenter on intercultural communication, Egyptian and Middle Eastern cultures, and Down syndrome. She is Vice President of GiGi’s Playhouse – a Down Syndrome Achievement Center. Basma sees herself as a traveler, writer, photographer, storyteller, rule-breaker, dreamer, artist, activist, environmentalist, and optimist. Her happiest moments often involve adventures with her spouse, Jon, two overly-active young sons, and extended family.
Story Club’s host and producer is actor/writer Amy Salloway! She’s the creator of the awardwinning autobiographical touring solo plays Does This Monologue Make Me Look Fat?, So Kiss Me Already, Herschel Gertz!, and Circumference, as well as the two-person show Entwined. You can hear five of her stories on the national podcast Risk!, and you can take storytelling, memoir and creative writing classes from her through The Story Studio and Minneapolis Community Ed.
